3A Bear Mountain

Location: Kern County, California

Named for our largest (and most difficult to overlook) native animal. Erwin Gudde in his California Place Names notes that there are about 25 similarly named features in California.

The HPS listed this peak with various elevations 6934' (1946-54), 6895' (1958).

Lookout: Calif. Dept. of Parks and Recreation C3 14' by 14' wood cab, with enclosed 20' timber tower (1939), abandoned (n.d.).

Variant name: Bear Peak (Wheeler Survey 1878).

Delisted from HPS Peak List when free access was restricted by owners, the Tejon Ranch (1977).

Name first appears on USGS Caliente quad (1913).

Peak was on the original 1946 HPS Peak List.
