PAST Scheduled Outings - 2006

This is a list of Hundred Peaks Section sponsored outings (with a smattering of other Sierra Club outings of interest to HPS) that have been published in the section newsletter, the Lookout and/or the Angeles Chapter Schedule of Activities and/or the section's mailing list for outings and announcements.

Jan 1 Sun Hundred Peaks, PVSB, Natural Science
I: San Jacinto Pk (10,804'), Folly Pk (10,480'), Drury Pk (10,160'), Marion Mtn (10,320') via Snowshoe: Moderately paced, strenuous over varying terrain from the tram. We will attempt up to four peaks, resulting in 10 miles and 3500' gain. The leaders have made this San Jacinto pilgrimage for 6 years. Mt Charleston and the Channel Islands have often been visible. Take time to learn from our naturalist about the fauna and flora. Bring 10 essentials, lunch, and water. O: Mount Lukens (5074'): Via Stone Canyon Trail 7 miles round trip, 3300' gain. A real climb at a moderate pace to the highest point in the City of L.A. with views in all directions. Meet 8:59 AM in the supermarket parking lot on the NE corner of Foothill Blvd and Mt Gleason Rd (Thomas Guide p 503 H3) with water, lunch, suitable clothing and good footwear. I: Bernard Peak (5440'), Little Berdoo Peak (5430'): Moderate loop hike to visit two peaks in cool Joshua Tree Natl Park, 7 miles round trip, 1800' gain in desert terrain. Significant dirt road driving, high-clearance vehicles especially welcome. Consider staying over for the Sunday trip to Quail Mtn. O: Ryan Mountain (5457'), Lost Horse Mountain (5313'), Mt. Inspiration (5560'): Joshua Tree Cleanout #2 of 4. Come hike three easy peaks in Joshua Tree National Park in the second of a series of four cleanouts of the HPS peak list for JTNP. We'll hike Ryan Mountain, 3 miles roundtrip, in the evening among a star studded sky so bring your headlamp. Total for the day, 10 miles, 2700' total gain mostly on trail with some easy cross country. Consider camping overnight with us at Sheep Pass Group Camp (8 vehicle max., so reserve early) and join us for Cleanout #3 on Sunday. Jan 14-16 Sat-Mon Wilderness Adventures, Hundred Peaks
I: 4th Annual MLK Desert Carcamp at Joshua Tree NP: Camp at group site Sat, Sun nights (Fri optional). Saturday dayhike in Wonderland of Rocks, 8 miles, 1000' gain with some rock scrambling. Sunday do 3 HPS peaks (10 miles, 2700' gain total): Lost Horse (5313'), Mount Inspiration (5560'), Ryan (5457'). Monday climb HPS peak Warren Point (5103'), 6 miles, 1100' gain. Not for beginners. Optional dinner in 29 Palms Saturday nite. Group will share modest campground expense, maximum $15 each. I: San Ysidro Mountain (6147'), Combs Peak (6193'): Come join us for a couple of peaks in/near Anza Borrego that are not led very often. Hikes will be strenuous, but at a moderate pace. Expect warm temperatures in the desert! Totals will be 13 miles/3300' gain. Your 4 wheel drive/high clearance vehicles will be welcome, due to dirt road driving to get to trail heads. O: Vetter Mountain Lookout (5908') from Angeles Crest Highway: Short 2-3 hour round trip hike on dirt road to the summit of Vetter Mountain. Suitable for small or out-of-shape K9s. There you will find a historic old fire lookout that is no longer used, but in the process of being restored. K9s welcome, but must be leashed during lunch. Meet 9 AM La Canada rideshare point. Annual Awards Banquet: To be held at Taix Restaurant, 1911 Sunset Blvd. Social hour 5 PM, dinner 6:30 PM. O: Sunset Peak (5796'): 7 miles, 1500' gain, 3 hours round trip on dirt road. From the summit of Sunset Peak are spectacular views of Mt Baldy and, on a clear day, the Pacific Ocean and the summits of Santiago and Modjeska Peaks, the high points of Orange County can be seen in the distance. Annual Joint Peaks Section Meeting: The Desert Peaks Section will host this year's Annual Joint Meeting Section get together. Long-time friend and recently retired BLM Ranger STEVE SMITH will present a fascinating program on the Adopt-a-Cabin program, focusing on the many historic cabins located in the mountains and canyons where we hike. Meet at The Griffith Park Ranger Station, 4730 Crystal Springs Dr. From LA take the I-5 to Griffith Park. 7:30PM.

O: Bighorn Mountains (5894'), Meeks Mountain (6277'): Come join us for a couple of seldom led peaks in the high desert area between Big Bear and Joshua Tree. Totals will be 10 miles and 2100' gain, much of it on dirt roads. There is a LOT of dirt road driving to get to the trailheads, with a fair amount of sandy surface, so 4WD, or at least high clearance will be necessary to get in and out. Hike will be at a moderate pace, with great views from the peaks. We may get lucky and see the desert in bloom! Bring the 10 essentials, hiking boots, plenty of liquid, food, rain wear, AND a sense of humor. Rain/snow will cancel. I: Rabbit Peak #2 (6,640') and Villager Peak (5,756'): Hike to these two desert peaks in the Santa Rosa Mountains. The trip will be a backpack with 7,900' gain, 21 miles round trip. The route will be via the south side over Villager up to Rabbit. There should be great views of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park to the south and the Salton Sea to the east. Saturday: Backpack 3 miles to Horse Thief Creek for a pleasant overnight camp at creekside. Sunday: Traverse a strenuous 12 mile loop hike to the peaks, with much cross-country travel in desert terrain, then pack out. Camping permit required, so reserve early. The hike will be 15+ miles, 4500'+ of gain. Assuming we're all hiking, there will be a slow group (Wolf & Karen) and a not-as-slow group (Greg and Sandy). I: Martinez Mountain (6560+), Sheep Mountain (5141'): This trip was planned as a strenuous backpack in the Santa Rosa Wilderness, 18 miles, 5000' gain. Martinez Mountain is also on the DPS List. We will now skip the overnight camping and do the entire route as a dayhike on Saturday. Much rugged cross-country travel in desert terrain. I: Asbestos Mountain (5265'), Toro Peak (8716'), Santa Rosa Mountain (8070'): Due to snow conditions, replaced with Iron Mountain #3 (5040'), Round Top (6316'): Strenuous, some crosscountry terrain, moderate pace. We plan to climb these 2 peaks. 3000' gain 6 miles round trip. We'll continue on Saturday and bag Fox at a moderate pace on steep-slippery, brushy cross-country for 5 miles and about 2300' gain. Saturday night we'll carcamp in the area to stage for Caliente on Sunday: 17 miles round trip, 3000' gain, to view the plains from the high ridges and visit the summit cabin at the high point of San Luis Obispo County. "A T party!" she exclaims and scrambles over Devil's Backbone, past the ski lift and up Thunder Mountain (8587'), Telegraph Peak (8985') and Timber Mountain (8303') before descending Icehouse Canyon to Grandma's house and a waiting car shuttle. Start in Indian Wells Canyon, climb up and traverse the whole ridge. Good exercise of climbing skills for Sierra peaks. About 3 miles, 2500' gain for the day. O: Lead the List Celebration for Tom Hill on Saturday October 21: We've followed Tom up many a Hill, and now it's time to honor him by following him up one or more peaks -- Mount Sally (5408'), Mount Mooney (5840'), Vetter Mountain (5908'), and Mount Hillyer (6200') as he finishes leading the list. Each of these Angeles National Forest peaks is a separate, easy hike averaging 600' gain. Do one or all. Meet 8 AM La Cañada rideshare point. When the hikes are finished, about 3 pm or earlier, we'll get together for a celebration at the Chilao picnic grounds (look for signs directing folks to the site). Bring snacks to curb your appetite as you hike, and real food and/or drinks to share at the party where barbecue facilities will be available. To avoid a lot of driving we will do them in two days with an overnight stay in Santa Maria. Cerro Alto is 5 miles with 1600' gain, Valencia is 4 miles with 1300' gain, and Gaviota 6 miles with 2100' gain. We'll hike the first two peaks on the first day, Gaviota on the second day. I: Martinez Mountain (6560'), Sheep Mountain (5141'): Join us for a leisurely fall backpack of two fine peaks on the Hundred Peaks list (and as a bonus, Martinez is also a DPS peak). Weekend totals strenuous, 22 miles, 5500' gain, with much cross country travel in desert terrain. We'll pack in Sat morning to probably waterless Cactus Spring (5 miles one-way, 1000' gain), and climb Sheep (4 miles round trip, 1000' gain) in the afternoon. Celebrate afterward with a modified Happy Hour. Climb Martinez on Sunday (8 miles round trip, 2500' gain from camp) and pack out. Be prepared for some brush and rock scrambling on the Martinez climb. I: Black Mountain #4 (6149'), Meeks Mountain (6277'), Bighorn Mountains (5894'): Due to weather considerations, this trip has changed from a two day car camp to a one day day hike. Chaparrosa and Ruby have been dropped, and the three remaining peaks (Black #4, Meeks, Bighorn Mountains) will be done on Saturday. Desert carcamp just north of Yucca Valley. Ruby Mountain is a candidate for the Lower Peaks List. First three peaks Saturday as separate hikes, 10 miles round trip 2500' gain for the set, with some easy cross-country. Carcamp Saturday night. Sunday climb Black Mountain #4 cross-country through thorny plants from the north, 8 miles round trip, 2000' gain. Chaparrosa is a pleasant option on the driving return, adding an extra 6 miles, 1200' gain. High-clearance vehicles especially welcome.
