Annual Awards Banquet: Renowned author and hiker John Robinson presents a program, "Celebration of Peaks and People." Robinson is author of Trails of the Angeles and San Bernardino Mountain Trails, virtual hiking bibles for trekkers in southern California. John has also written histories of our three nearby ranges, the San Gabriels, the San Bernardinos, and the San Jacintos, and is a member of the Chapter history committee. This is a rare opportunity to meet him and share his encyclopedic knowledge of our peaks. The celebrating starts at 5 pm with no host bar and a chance to chat with your hiking buddies and see what they look like without hat hair. This is also the yearly occasion for recognizing member's achievements and presenting awards. The event will be at Les Freres Taix Restaurant (1911 Sunset Blvd). You can purchase discount raffle tickets for $4 for 5. For this year we have selected the beautiful and moderately angled west ridge of Mt Waterman in the Angeles N. F. Saturday, backpack on snowshoes 2 miles and establish base camp. I Antimony Peak (6848'), Eagle Rest Peak (6005'): Enjoy pine forests and the picturesque high country of our San Emigdio Range. Take time to learn from our naturalist about the fauna and flora. The hike is a strenuous 10 miles, 5500' gain route on trail and steep brushy rocky cross-country. We will climb Antimony twice, once on the way to Eagle Rest and once back. I Hildreth Peak (5065'): Hike Hildreth by the interesting and moderately challenging 16 mile, 3700' gain cross-country route from Agua Caliente Hot Spring on the south side of the peak near Santa Barbara.  In contrast to the boring road hike that is usually done, this route follows a river through a beautiful valley with opportunities to swim in clear pools or soak in hot springs. I Chili Cookoff Challenge, Queen Mountain (5680'), Pinto Mountain (3983'): Want to cook, judge or eat hand-crafted chili prepared right there in the desert on a camp stove? Tell your best whopper around the campfire? Or just experience the desert in early spring with the possibility of seeing wildflowers or desert critters? Then join us for all or part of this 11th annual chili cook-off weekend! Location this year will be in a primitive camping area just northeast and outside of Joshua Tree National Park. Saturday morning climb HPS-listed Queen Mountain (4 miles round trip, 1000' gain) led by HPS. I List Finishers' Special - Black Mountain #6 (5244'), Red Mountain (5261'): Visit two remote peaks in northeastern Kern County. Moderately strenuous hikes at a relaxed pace over rocky steep cross-country terrain, totaling 14 miles round trip, 3000' gain. Long day with dirt road driving to each peak. Requires 4wd vehicles. This hike is part of a series that helps hikers who are nearing HPS list completion, but anyone up for a challenge is welcome to participate. Assaults On Baldy: 6:30 am. These are two hikes that take different routes to the peak. The first is the 5th hike of our annual pre-Whitney hikes and is the most strenuous route to the peak, with a gain of nearly 6000 feet in 3 horizontal miles. It will start and finish in Baldy Village, taking Bear Canyon 5800' and 13 miles round trip to the summit. Call leader with recent hiking/fitness resume. BRING: Ten essentials, layered clothing, 4 qts water and lunch.

The second hike is a much easier route from Manker Flat to the summit and reduces your round trip to 8 miles and 3800'. Locals call this the Ski Hut Trail as it passes the Sierra Club San Antonio Ski Hut about 2 miles along the way. Plan on meeting "the men" at the top. Skyline Trail (San Jacinto Peak): 4:00 am. Skyline is a one-way hike up from Palm Springs to the Aerial Tramway station at the top. It is well-suited to be our pick for the 6th "pre-Whitney" hike this year. You hike up 8000 ft. in 9 miles. We'll plan on hiking just 11.5 miles more round trip with just another 2300 feet elevation (so we can make it to the peak) and then take the tram back down to your cars. We will be leaving very early in the morning. O Mines and Cabins of San Antonio Canyon, Baldy Notch: Hike up the moderately steep dirt road from the San Antonio Falls Road to Baldy Notch at the end of the ski lift at 7800', where we'll search for the site of Baldy Cabin, a log house built by miners and later converted for use by the Chapter in the late 1920s. 6 miles round trip, 1800' gain. Gold mining was a major activity in upper San Antonio Canyon and at Baldy Notch from the early 1870s into the 1930s. We'll discuss these old-time mining activities and, aided by photographs dating back to the 1890s, visit some of the sites. Samon Peak (6227') by Mountain Bike: Moderately paced, moderately strenuous mountain bike and hike in beautiful Los Padres National Forest wilderness areas north of Santa Barbara. Meet 8 am at Mil Potrero Campground. It will take about an hour to drive to the trailhead. The pavement ends about 5 miles before the trailhead -- high clearance vehicles are recommended for this section. Mountain bike 9.5 miles one-way from trailhead to Chokecherry Springs (2400' elev gain, estimate 2.5 hours). Hike 6 miles roundtrip from Chokecherry Springs to Samon Peak (1900' elev gain, estimate 7.5 hours). Then end the day with a really fun mountain bike ride down those 9.5 miles back to the cars (there is a short 300' gain section on return, estimate 1.5 hours). The totals for the trip are approximately 25 miles, 4600' gain on road, trail, and steep, brushy cross-country terrain and will take approximately 11-12 hours. What to bring: good quality mountain bike, day backpack, 10 essentials, trekking poles, stash bag, bike helmet, cable bike lock, spare tube, bike light sufficient for riding at night, enough food for about 11-12 hours adventure, start with 2-3 bike bottles of water to Chokecherry, bring additional empty water bottles to increase to 4-5 bike bottles for hike (we will filter water at Chokecherry Springs). O Santiago Peak (5687'), Modjeska Peak (5496'), Bald Peak (3947'), Bedford Peak (3800'), Pleasants Peak (4007'): Come join us on a relaxed, view-filled driving tour with nice breaks for hiking atop the Santa Ana Mountains, 5 miles round trip, 1200' gain if you ascend all five. Newcomers welcome. The final three peaks are on the Great Lower Peaks List (free copy handed out to participants). All five peaks have excellent alternative hiking routes available, so expect some fascinating trail talk. Much dirt road driving; high clearance vehicles recommended. If Cleveland Forest remains closed, the alternate plan still involves high-clearance vehicles and much dirt road driving for the HPS peaks, but destinations will be Mount Russell (2704'), a fine peak hiked from paved road on the Lower Peaks List, 5 miles round trip, 1000' gain, some boulder scrambling. This peak is seldom visited so expect moderate to heavy brush, but we shall not clip or prune the route: The peak and route are located entirely within protected Lake Perris State Park. There will also be a state park entrance fee of $4 per vehicle. We then continue on a driving and hiking tour (optional) of HPS peaks near Idyllwild: Thomas Mtn (6825'), Rouse Hill (5168'), and Indian Mtn (5790'). Meet 7am Pomona rideshare point. I Sheep Mountain (5141'), Martinez Mountain (6560'): Very strenuous backpack in the Santa Rosa Mountains. Knock off two whoppers. Saturday backpack 5 miles on trail to Cactus Spring, set up camp and cross-country 3 miles round trip to Sheep Mountain (2900' gain). Sunday trail and cross-country 6 miles round trip to Martinez Mountain over rocky cross-country route (4300' gain) and pack out, total 16 miles for the day. This unique terrain is flushed with beautiful Pinyon Pines, various cacti, yucca, desert washes, deep canyons, steep and rugged gullies and rewards the hardy peak victors with wonderful views of familiar peaks far and wide.
