Brown Mountain

12 February 1994

By: Joe Young

Leaders: Stag Brown, Bobcat Thompson, Joe Young

28 hikers participated in Stag's annual birthday hike. Rains earlier in the week had given way to clear skies and cool temps. Millard Canyon had plenty of water in it this year. We began the hike at 8:20.

Bobcat led first, taking the Sunset Ridge trail for a short distance, then plunging back into Millard Canyon. Shortly Stag took over and led the group over a few stream crossings and up to the saddle on the ridge to Brown. At this point the boot/foot problems of one hiker became apparent. Joe then led the group to the summit of Brown. The group sang "Happy Birthday" to Stag as he reached the summit.

After over 1 hour on the summit, the group minus Bobcat and the one hiker left and started down the steep ridge which goes almost directly to Millard Campground. They encountered Bobcat, David Reneric and the hiker with boot/foot problems who split off from the main group and came down very slowly. David Reneric assisted, among other ways, by using his knife to cut open the boots of the beleaguered hiker, who had high spirits although enduring much pain. The rest of the group proceeded down, arriving at the parking lot at around 4:00. Bobcat & company arrived at 6:15.

Everyone eventually made it out okay. This had been a long day, especially for Bobcat whose patience was tested.
